Whenever a significant honors show draws close, one notices a clamor to include additional classifications to honor underappreciated efforts and satisfy the passions of followers dedicated to specific genres.
Another commentator previously argued supporting a scary games classification. It would be amazing. Equally deserving are board games, representing someone's personal cause. Yet I need to apologize in advance for pushing forward because like all single-minded supporters, I possess a compelling case for why my demand remains most pressing and significant. The demand is this: We need an award type for logic-based games.
Categorizing Game Types
Classifying creative works defies precise measurement; it remains highly personal, and it will always start arguments resulting in unclear classifications. There’s a reason cinema institutions steer clear of genre categories. Yet it remains a necessary evil for the industry of gaming, that demonstrate such variety it's challenging to consider them a single creative category.
To recognize the complete range of gaming accomplishments to receive acknowledgment, and to ensure all game types to have a chance for representation, classification by type becomes crucial.
Present Award Structure
Prominent interactive entertainment events offer these award types recognizing Action, Action/Adventure, RPG experiences, Fighting, Simulation and strategy titles, and Sports/Racing games. Together, these six categories successfully include a lot of ground, allowing placement accommodating various experiences.
Not so for puzzle games. No suitable classification appears to put them. Examine these examples from recent excellent titles, all very different: structural challenges in a particular game, fast-paced pattern recognition in a different title, thought-provoking social scenarios in another game. Which classification works between these six categories? Simply put, no category fits.
Acknowledgment Issues
There are dozens of brilliant puzzle games launched regularly without proper recognition in entertainment awards, if they accidentally match classification types such as Handheld titles, Virtual reality experiences, or the extremely competitive Indie races.
- An iconic brain-teaser got overlooked in any category in 2014
- Another creative title missed out in 2019
- Popular arranging title received no acknowledgment in 2021
- Just some puzzle games managed to sneak into small studio or handheld classifications
Importance of Logic Titles
Commonly they're small games, however the design in brain-teasers holds tremendous importance. Well-known matching games count as most popular titles worldwide and have been for many years.
The legendary block-stacking game competes with famous sandbox experiences competing to become best-selling game of all time; it also contends for best game of all time. Logic titles represent cornerstones to the art of video games, and engaging across multiple categories.
Recommendation and Reasoning
Puzzle games wouldn’t have such difficulty. You could fill five nominees interesting, varied, worthy titles each ceremony simply — perhaps, with difficulty, because you’d have to leave so many good games out.
Restating the point, these represent titles without proper classification in important events. Brain-teaser creators are working at the demanding boundary of video game design, developing some of most fundamental forms within interactive entertainment. Similar to cinema stunt performers, they merit acknowledgment. We shouldn't delay generations.
