The former Brazilian leader has been arrested after authorities determined he posed a concrete flight risk while under domestic detention.

The one-time leader was sentenced of orchestrating a government overthrow in last fall and sentenced more than a 27-year term in jail, but he continued under home detention pending court reviews.

High Court Judge Justice Moraes said the move to detain the septuagenarian politician was a precautionary step after recent developments emerged.

This included seeking to disable his ankle monitor and a call for a supporters' gathering that could "allow for a chance to flee".

Legal Document Reveals Escape Concerns

In a filing authorising the detention, the judge said intelligence from the unit overseeing his home detention suggested the one-time head of state's "intention to break the tracking monitor to ensure success in his flight.

This, it said, would be "facilitated by the disorder caused by the demonstration called by his child.

His son, Flávio Bolsonaro, who works as a congressional representative, called for a meeting of his backers near Bolsonaro's home to take place on Saturday evening.

His son wrote on online platforms on last Friday: Will you battle for your country, or watch it all from your mobile device there on your sofa? I call on you to battle with us."

He said the gathering would be so followers could offer prayers for his well-being and for the restoration of democratic rule in our country."

Diplomatic Refuge Fears

Part of the magistrate's determination was the chance of Bolsonaro's transfer to foreign missions near the home, considering that the investigations revealed a history of arranging to request asylum through a consular facility", a declaration said.

The legal document emphasizes that the United States embassy in the capital, the capital city, is positioned around 13km from the former president's residence.

Worldwide Consequences

The former president's legal troubles have provoked anger from fellow populist conservative United States President Trump, causing him to enact a half-rate duty on Brazilian product imports.

Bolsonaro is being held in a national police facility in Brasilia and will experience a detention review on Sunday.

Recent Judicial Appeals

It was only on the previous day that the ex-leader's attorneys asked the High Court to authorize him to complete his entire prison term under house arrest, with electronic monitoring.

They also petitioned that Bolsonaro be authorized to exit his dwelling for medical care, saying he required ongoing care for lung conditions and other illnesses.

Details of Guilty Verdict

Bolsonaro was convicted of heading a scheme aimed at maintaining his control after he was defeated in the national vote to his ideological adversary, Lula.

High Court judges said that he was aware of a scheme which encompassed plans to assassinate his opponent and his running partner, his vice-presidential candidate, and to arrest and execute the presiding judge - the High Court judge who has been overseeing Bolsonaro's trial.

The plot was stopped because it didn't receive the backing of the armed forces officials. The current president was took office without problem on 1 January 2023.

But a following week, on 8 January, many his followers stormed and vandalised government buildings in the national capital, the capital city.

The security forces stepped in and around 1,500 people were taken into custody.

The justices found that the rioters had been provoked by him whose plan, they said, was for the country's army to step in, bring back stability and bring him back to power.

At the moment, Bolsonaro's lawyers called the 27 years and three months sentence unreasonably severe".

He was also banned from running for public office until 2060 - eight years after the conclusion of his imprisonment.

The former president called the trial a political persecution and said it was designed to prevent him running in the next presidential race.
