Roughly 50 automobiles have been smeared with what appears to be blood from a person in the German town of Hanau near Frankfurt, according to authorities.
Vehicles, exterior walls and postboxes were marked, sometimes with prohibited symbols, they reported in a release.
Police state they were contacted in the late hours on Wednesday evening, when a man noticed that a automobile in the Lamboy neighborhood of Hanau had been covered with a red-colored liquid.
The fluid had been applied in the pattern of a Nazi symbol, they reported.
Law enforcement then located many other marked vehicles and building exteriors in the nearby vicinity.
Nazi symbols are illegal in Germany under legislation prohibiting the public exhibition of symbols from the Nazi era.
Law enforcement report early analysis suggest the substance was likely human blood.
"At present there remains no lead as to where it came from; authorities are presently not cognizant of any physical harm in association with the event," they commented.
Municipal representatives said they were working "to solve the mystery" and have appealed to the public for tips.
A high-ranking political figure stated the incident rendered him speechless and had to be addressed rapidly.
"This event strikes at the center of Hanau and reawakens the wounds of the right-wing violent incident five years ago," he stated on a platform, recalling the murder of nine individuals by a gunman aiming at residents of immigrant origin in 2020.
